Achimota Forest Should Not Be Declassified, Ghana Institute of Foresters Warns

Achimota Forest

The Ghana Institute of Foresters (GIF) has requested that the government issue Executive Instrument (E.I. 144) declassifying some parts of the Achimota Forest on the southern periphery as a forest reserve.

The GIF stated in a news release dated June 1, 2022 that the decision will set a precedent for pre-acquisition owners of other forest reserves to almost file claims for areas of forest reserves to be de-classified.

If it occurs, the country may lose even more urban forest reserves.

Professor S.K. Oppong, President of the GIF, contends that if the government returns part of the Achimota Forest to its owners, the government will be unable to say no to other people whose farms have been made into forest reserves.
