US: Nancy Pelosi Tested Positive For COVID-19

Nancy Pelosi tests positive for COVID-19

Following many politicians and cabinet officials testing positive for COVID-19 this week, Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the United States House of Representatives, has become the latest US figure to develop the virus.

Pelosi tested positive on Thursday, but was asymptomatic, according to Drew Hammill, a spokesperson for the 82-year-old Democratic leader.

In a statement, Hammill said, “the speaker is fully vaccinated and boosted, and is thankful for the robust protection the vaccine has provided.”

At a ceremony for the signing of a postal reform bill on Wednesday, Pelosi was in close proximity to President Joe Biden.

The president tested negative for the virus, according to a statement released by the White House on Thursday.

The White House stated, “the president is not considered a close contact of Speaker Pelosi as defined by the [US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention]. The President saw Speaker Pelosi at White House events and had brief interactions over the course of the last two days.”

“Last night as a part of his regular testing cadence, the president tested negative. He will continue to be tested regularly. The president wishes Speaker Pelosi a speedy recovery.”

In a statement, Hammill said, “the speaker is fully vaccinated and boosted, and is thankful for the robust protection the vaccine has provided.”

A White House official was quoted by the Reuters news agency as stating that Vice President Kamala Harris’ communications director, who tested positive on Wednesday, also tested negative on Thursday.

Congress members Adam Schiff, Katherine Clark, Joaquin Castro, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Derek Kilmer, and Scott Peters all tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week, as did Attorney General Merrick Garland and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

Many of the other officials who tested positive had previously met at gatherings in Washington, DC.

The majority of legislators who have had positive tests have indicated they had minor illnesses, pinning their modest symptoms on vaccination.

According to statistics provided by John Hopkins University, the United States has recorded more than 80 million verified COVID-19 infections and more than 984,000 fatalities tied to the virus since the pandemic began in 2020.
