After six people were killed at an Independence Day parade close to Chicago on July 4, US authorities arrested a suspect.
Robert E. Crimo III, 22, was reportedly apprehended by police following a brief pursuit.
A shooter in the city of Highland Park shot at individuals from a rooftop while using a high-powered weapon, injuring at least 24 other people.
It is the most recent mass shooting to occur in the US; one has occurred every week in 2022.
President Biden declared that the violence had “shocked” him.
After an hours-long manhunt, Mr Crimo was apprehended. He was first described as a “person of interest” in the shooting, but following his arrest, police stated that they believed he was the perpetrator.
Just a few minutes into the parade, the alleged gunman started firing.
As part of the city’s Independence Day festivities, floats, marching bands, and other community entertainment were planned for the event.
What should have been one of the happiest days of the year, however, suddenly descended into chaos as people fled the scene, leaving pushchairs, handbags, and lawn chairs lying everywhere on the street.
From the rooftop of a neighboring store, where police claim they found “evidence of a firearm,” the suspect is thought to have shot at the crowd.
A fourth victim, who the local coroner reported died at a nearby hospital, was among the five people who died at the scene.
Mayor Nancy Rotering of the city stated, “On a day that we came together to celebrate community and freedom, we’re instead mourning the tragic loss of life.”
