Russian forces reportedly destroyed a wave of 20 Ukrainian drones over the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia has occupied.
The attempted attack was unsuccessful early on Saturday morning, the defence ministry reported on the messaging app Telegram. There were no injuries and no damage.
The ministry reported that electronic warfare suppressed six drones and that air defence systems destroyed fourteen drones.
The purpose of the reported attacks on the peninsula was not immediately clear.
Earlier, Sergei Kryuchkov, a counsellor to the Crimea governor appointed by Russia, said that air defence systems were fending off air strikes in several regions of the peninsula.
Traffic on the Crimean Bridge, which connects the Black Sea peninsula with the Russian province of Krasnodar, was halted for roughly two hours starting at 01:30 local time (22:30 GMT on Friday), according to Crimean transport officials’ Telegram channel.
Although Ukraine seldom ever openly claims responsibility for such operations, the purported strike on Crimea is just the most recent instance of the country using armed drones to target areas deep within Russia and Russian-controlled territory.
